Contextual Details

After the mid-semester break, we started working on a workshop about detailing and using the feedback that we got from our formative assessment to create a goal for ourselves this week.

I chose 2 keywords that are relevant to my design that I can use to create context within my design. I created a word map using word association to develop contextual details further.

Floor Plans

I was not happy with how my floor plan layout was before so I started to work on a new one that best fit the characteristics and concept of my design. I went back to Week 3 where I created the surface designs. A couple of people had mentioned to me that these designs looked like they could be a floor plan so I decided to try that idea out. I imagined that it would also give the connotation of walking through a forest with these tall curved walls surrounding you as you walk through the corridor.

I did a few iteration drawings of some floor plan layouts. I did not want the walls to be too curvey like the surface design that I created, but more of a subtle curve. When I made them on Rhino, I did not like how they looked disconnected, so I connected the lines and created the rooms behind the curved walls.

Final Floor Plan in Rhino

I'm content with how it turned out. The layout also reminds me of how the tropical rainforest looks from an aerial view, the walls represent the rivers running through the forest.

Light Conditions

I started playing around with the light conditions in the space, I focused on the corridors. I thought that cove lights would look good in the corridors as the lights would have a gradual softening light going down the wall. I also added a strip light at the bottom of the wall to give more light to the space. I'm not too sure about them as they look quite harsh and I'm not sure how I can soften them a bit.

I started out by only testing different colours of lights, I wanted the colour to remain quite warm but also bright enough so that people are not falling asleep. Then I continued to test out the lights by seeing how the lights will react to different materials. I want the materials that I use to remain quite minimal, such as plaster, concrete and wood.
