Changing my Brief
My brief started out with the idea of memory and how it can get warped depending on how we remember our memories. But after reading some articles for theory, I started thinking about my contexts and methods that I tend to use in my design and it always leads back to nature.
I tend to lean towards biophilic and biomimicry design due to the fact that I grew up on a tropical island and nature has always made me feel close to home and at peace. Nature is also known to have good impact on people's wellbeing and I wanted to create a small space within the city where people can escape to. This led me wanting to change the atmosphere of Fort Lane, given that the lane looks run down, industrial like and dull. Bringing in biophilic and biomimicry design will improve the quality of the space.
So instead of creating a restaurant, I want to create a wellness centre/spa that will assist to human health and wellbeing. People can step away from the fast pace moving city for a weekend and enter a spa within the city without traveling too far.
Application of Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions.

Here are 3 types of ways of applying the biophilic concept to a space:
-
Direct experience of nature - actual contact with environment features such as natural light, air, plants, animals, water, landscapes, fire, ecosystems
-
Indirect experience of nature - images of nature, natural materials, colours, shapes and forms that evoke and mimic nature
-
Experience of space & place - characteristics of nature that advance human health and wellbeing i.e. open views and places for retreat and refuge within organised diversity, clear pathways within natural waypoints and cultural and ecological elements that will help develop the place.
I am leaning towards using the indirect experience of nature & experience of space & place application as I think the curve forms that I have already applied to the exterior and interior will transition well into my new idea.
I went ahead and made another set of floor plans with my new design brief. I did not realise until I got to the last design that I did not design a bathroom space and emergency exit for the space -_-
So I tried to squeeze in a bathroom space (minus the emergency exit).

Improved Facade

I tweaked the design a bit by extending the curved forms across the street and down the other side of the building creating a tunnel. I still need to figure out how to extend the design a bit to the building over as the only way to get to the space is through an elevator from the building next to it, to create some sort of cohesiveness.
I also made the wood fins different colours of wood to add some contrast to the design.
Draft Storyboards
I made draft storyboards of different moments in the space. Note that these were made before I changed my brief to be a wellness spa.
